About Janani Suraksha Yojana

Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention under the National Rural Health Mission (NHM). It has been implemented to reduce maternal and child mortality by promoting institutional delivery among pregnant women. The scheme is being implemented in all States and Union Territories (UTs) with a special focus on the Low Performing States (LPS).

The scheme, launched on 12 April 2005 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, is under implementation in all states and Union Territories (UTs), with a special focus on Low Performing States (LPS)

Objective Of this scheme

  • To disseminate institutional delivery in the country
  • Reducing maternal mortality and neonatal mortality
  • Taking responsibility for prenatal and postpartum conditions to ensure the health of the baby and mother

Eligibility Criteria

Under the scheme of Janani Suraksha Yojana, expectant mothers from rural and urban areas can apply for this scheme
The pregnant woman must be 19 years or older.
Mothers will get the benefits of this scheme up to the birth of two children
There are many public and private hospitals under this scheme from which the mother will get the benefits once she completes her delivery.

The eligibility for cash assistance under the JSY is as shown below:

  
LPSAll pregnant women delivering in government health centers, such as Sub Centers (SCs)/Primary Health Centers (PHCs)/Community Health Centers (CHCs)/First Referral Units (FRUs)/general wards of the district or state hospitals
HPSAll BPL/Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) women delivering in a government health center, such as SC/PHC/CHC/FRU/general wards of district or state hospital
LPS & HPSBPL/SC/ST women in accredited private institutions

Maternal Protection States with more than 25 percent institutional deliveries are called High Performing States (HPS), and states with less than 25 percent institutional deliveries are called Low Performing States (LPS). Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Odisha, Assam and Jammu and Kashmir have been identified as low performing states. The remaining states of the country are identified as high performing states.

Benefits

Under the scheme of Janani Suraksha Yojana, the government will provide a financial assistance of Rs 6000 to every pregnant woman for delivery in government and private hospitals covered by the scheme.
Under Janani Suraksha Yojana, pregnant women in rural areas will be paid Rs.1400 (LPS), and pregnant women in urban areas will be paid Rs.1000 (LPS).
Financial assistance will also be provided to the WASA worker if the pregnant woman goes to the hospital and delivers with the help of an Anganwadi worker or Asha Karmi.

*ASHA package of Rs 600 in rural areas include Rs 300 for ANC component and Rs 300 for facilitating institutional delivery.

**ASHA package of Rs. 400 in urban areas include Rs 200 for ANC components and Rs 200 for facilitating institutional delivery.

How to apply

You can register for this scheme by visiting the local ASHA worker, Anganbari worker, ANM, or the nearest government hospital.
