About Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme For Coir Workers

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) has implemented a group insurance scheme for coir workers. The scheme aims to provide insurance coverage against accidental death and permanent disability of the insured member. Coir processing activities, such as extracting fibre, spinning coir yarn, and producing coir rope and finished products, can be physically demanding, stressful, and hazardous. Workers involved in the processing of coir using machinery and equipment are susceptible to minor or major accidents at the worksite and elsewhere. This scheme will provide relief to the legal heirs of a coir worker who has experienced an accidental death, as well as compensation to coir workers who have incurred permanent total or partial disability.

Objective Of This Scheme

  • To provide financial assistance to coir workers and their families in case of accidental death or permanent disability.
  • To improve the social security and well-being of coir workers, a vulnerable section of society.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The applicant must be EITHER a disabled coir worker OR a nominee of the disabled/deceased coir worker.
  • If the applicant is a disabled coir worker, he/she should be at least 14 years in age.If the applicant is a disabled coir worker,
  • the percentage of disability should be at least 40%.

  • The scheme covers accidental death and disability only.
  • The coir board pays the entire insurance premium to the chosen insurance company.
  • The scheme covers around 4 lakh coir workers across India.

Benefits

  • For death due to accident – Rs 50,000.
  • For permanent total disability (loss of two eyes or two limbs, loss of one eye and one limb) – Rs 50,000
  • For permanent partial disability (loss of one eye or one limb) – Rs 25,000.

Required Documents

In case of Accidental Death:

  • Copy of Death certificate of the deceased person
  • Copy of police report or FIR.
  • Copy of Post-Mortem report if required
  • Copy of certificate issued by the Coir society, unit, establishment, nominated an officer of coir board.

In the case of Permanent Total Disability (PTD):

  • Copy of Police report or FIR.
  • Copy of disability certificate from a registered medical practitioner.
  • Copy of certificate issued by the Coir society, unit, establishment, nominated an officer of coir board.

In the case of Permanent Partial Disability (PPD):

  • Copy of Police report or FIR.
  • Copy of disability certificate from a registered medical practitioner.
  • Copy of certificate issued by the Coir society, unit, establishment, nominated an officer of coir board.

How To Apply

The Group Personal Accident Insurance Scheme for Coir Workers (GPAISCW) is an automatic scheme. This means coir workers do not need to apply individually to participate in the program and receive its benefits.


Claim Submission Process for GPAISCW (Offline)

General Steps:

  1. Notify Immediately: Inform the insurance company about the claim through the Coir Board as soon as possible.
  2. Submit Required Documents: Depending on the claim type, different documents are required:
    • Death:
      • Written notice within one month of death before internment/cremation.
      • Post-mortem report and original death certificate (fatal claims only).
      • Legal heirs must provide proof of their legal entitlement (e.g., probate, succession certificate).
    • Loss of Sight/Limb Amputation: Written notice within one month of the incident.
    • Permanent/Partial Disability: Claim form, doctor’s certificatemedical billsdiagnostic reports (X-rays), etc., proving the extent of the injury.
  3. Medical Examination (Optional): If the insurance company requires further clarification, the insured might be referred to a designated doctor for examination.

Additional Points:

  • Claim Deadline: Claims must be submitted within 12 months of the accident, even in the case of delayed death.
  • Policy Period: The accident must occur during the active policy period.
  • Claim Investigation: The insurance company might investigate the cause of death (fatal claims) and the validity of the claim.
  • Claim Verification: The Coir Board and insurance company will verify the claim details and legal heir identity.
